Vaccination for the dying - care or profit motive?

The senior citizens’ representation in Cologne is calling for independent ethics councils at private and public nursing homes, which should decide on the relevance of Corona vaccinations for dying patients. The senior citizens’ representation directly addressed the Mayor of Cologne, Henriette Reker, with this request as the current vaccination practice in Cologne senior homes is increasingly met with incomprehension by the nursing staff. A nurse wrote the following: “What I don’t understand at all: Why are people who have one or two weeks at most to live, who can neither swallow nor speak [...] why are they being vaccinated against Corona for the fourth time as they are dying?” The only thing her patients wanted was to be pain free, get enough air and have someone to hold their hand from time to time. What they didn’t need was a fourth vaccination. She goes on to report that doctors who weren’t called to vaccinate nevertheless vaccinated patients who were no longer able to make decisions at that time. She had heard of similar cases on Facebook from other employees in the nursing service. Some patients were vaccinated twelve hours before they died, mainly patients “without guardianship and with no relatives or acquaintances whatsoever”, the nurse said. This certainly questions the motive behind such actions. In any case, vaccination is indisputably a very lucrative business for doctors. According to the Coronavirus Vaccination Ordinance of the Federal Government, a doctor receives 28 EUR per vaccination. In addition, there is an extra 10 EUR for vaccination counselling, 35 EUR for a home visit, 8 EUR for vaccination during weekends, and up to 6 EUR for issuing a vaccination certificate. Furthermore, we are talking about almost 90 EUR in total that a doctor can additionally earn per patient, which is totally legal and state-subsidized. In practice, this led to further new problems. Now that pharmacists are also allowed to vaccinate, fierce disputes have broken out between doctors and pharmacists. Competition for attractive additional income has flared up in many places. Apparently, most pharmacists can’t vaccinate because they are dependent on doctors and not the other way around. The doctors' association, on the other hand, stated that the additional vaccination option by pharmacists was not necessary due to the existing workload. Once again, the disruptive potential of current politics is noticeable in many areas of our country. This current development is extremely dangerous for the objective and neutral medical advice by a doctor for his patient. That's why we call for a halt to government-organized incentives that tempt people to make personal profit from Corona vaccination.
