Ukraine and Afghanistan – West uses double standards

There is much attention on the war in Ukraine, as if it was “our” war. German media and politicians are outdoing each other with requests for more support and weapons. It seems as if nothing has been learned from the failure in Afghanistan. After 20 years of war, nothing was achieved apart from destruction for local people. So it is understandable that some countries would rather stay out of the Ukraine conflict. According to an article on deutschlandfunkkultur.de, former Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was recently asked at a conference in Doha, Qatar, why Pakistan had not condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She replied that Pakistan, as well as its Western neighbors, have been experiencing the violence of another world power for decades: the USA. The destruction in Afghanistan caused by the war with the USA would be many times greater than that in Ukraine. Therefore, according to Khar, Pakistan is counting on negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. But the German government wants to take part in this war in order to help another “democracy” get back on its feet again, no matter if the Ukrainian Azov regiment displays Nazi symbols. While the “fight against the right-wing” is intensifying again in Germany right now, people are not afraid to join forces with Ukrainian ultra-nationalists. There is also a double standards in attention: while food, clothing and money are being collected for the grieving Ukrainian population, there is a famine in Afghanistan that is hardly reported. The reason is that the USA has excluded Afghanistan from the SWIFT banking system and frozen their foreign accounts. And in other respects, too, people do not want to know much about the contradictions and atrocities committed by our US allies. As a reminder: In October 2001, the war in Afghanistan began as US retaliation for 9/11. Although 15 out of 19 of the alleged attackers were Saudi nationals, the attacks were planned in Hamburg according to official sources, and although the Taliban had only given Osama bin Laden refuge, the Bush government decided to overthrow them. Although those in charge in Washington knew as early as 2005 that they couldn’t win the war, it nevertheless continued for another 16 years. In the summer of 2021, a headless retreat took place, leaving thousands of local Afghan forces to their fate. Apparently, nothing has been learned from this war adventure. Instead, Washington made sure in the background that all pending proceedings against the USA for possible war crimes in Afghanistan were dropped at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Russia is unlikely to be granted this privilege, as Western governments have long used double standards.
