As a reminder: Michael Ballweg and his team held many demonstrations for peace, freedom and the rule of law. Among other things, the legendary demonstrations in Berlin in 2020. Ballweg is accused of having committed attempted fraud and attempted tax evasion. Michael Ballweg was released from custody on April 4, 2023, after 9 months. The original charge was completed commercial fraud. In the course of the investigation, however, this charge was gradually weakened, until finally there was only talk of an inappropriate attempt in which Ballweg allegedly wanted to commit a crime that was in fact not feasible. The charge of attempted tax evasion is based on the fact that Ballweg was unable to submit his tax return on time due to his imprisonment. Moderator: Mr. Ballweg, you have been fighting for peace, freedom and the rule of law for years. And now you, of all people, are standing in court today. How are you dealing with the fact that you have been under immense attack for years? Michael Ballweg: Well, I slept very well last night. And that also shows my inner state. There is a saying: If you tell the truth, you need a fast horse. And that applies to me too. But now the process of coming to terms with it begins. I am looking forward to what is to come and of course I accept the challenge. And yes, that's all for today. Moderator: One more quick question. You have a real marathon of negotiations ahead of you. How are you feeling about it? Michael Ballweg: Yes, of course I would - I have to be completely honest - I would also like to do other things in my life and above all continue to fight for basic rights and also for the issue of digital freedom. They are trying to restrict my ability to act by arresting me, including by confiscating my money more and more. But I am an entrepreneur, I do things and I am confident that I will continue to succeed. Moderator: Dr. Christ, you are the spokesman for Michael Ballweg's three lawyers who are defending him. Mr. Ballweg is appearing before the Stuttgart Regional Court today on charges of fraud and tax evasion. To the layman, this sounds like a fabricated case, because he was not able to do what he had to do. What do you say to this as a legal expert? Dr. Alexander Christ: All of the accusations sound very fabricated to us lawyers. It is attempted fraud in a fabricated form. That is a very strange legal construction that lawyers can argue about for a long time. The question of attempted or completed tax evasion is also a very problematic question - for legal reasons - because many taxpayers actually experience that if a deadline is missed, they are given an opportunity to submit it later, and I cannot remember a case where this accusation affected someone who was in custody. So here are some special features and we as a team of lawyers, as we have been doing all along, will of course be watching very closely what the public prosecutor's office says, what the court will say about these strangely constructed accusations and will then address these legal questions in due course.
