Ayon sa pananaliksik ng investigative journalist na si John Martin, ang nakaraan ni WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus ay lubos na kontrobersyal. Sa kanyang sariling bansa sa Ethiopia, siya ay isang mataas na ranggo na miyembro ng marahas na partidong Marxist Tigray People's Liberation Front, na internasyonal na inuri bilang isang teroristang organisasyon. Inagaw ng TPLF ang kapangyarihan noong 1991 at pinamunuan ang bansa sa paraang totalitarian mula noon.
