Syria is half as big as Germany, adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey – and is in the headlines for two reasons – First: The civil war in Syria is in its fifth year now, without an end in sight and - Second: by far the most refugees coming to Europe at the moment are from Syria. According to the UN refugee aid 3.8 million of Syrians have fled from Syria plus an additional 7.8 million of internally displaced refugees in their own country. That means up to 11.5 million displaced and refugees in total. So with a population of 23 million people, half of the Syrian people are fleeing. But what are the reasons for this drama, whether it be the war in Syria or the refugee crisis? Is it really president Bashar al-Assad whose removal is demanded so vehemently by the opposition, western counties and their allies? In fact, the Syrian expert Petra Becker from the Foundation for Science and Politics in Berlin, Germany claimed on Swiss Radio SRF1 that Assad was solely responsible for this war and even worse: he was not interested in any negotiations or solutions.
