Hampir semua negara bagian terkena dampaknya dan keadaan darurat telah diumumkan di beberapa wilayah. Surat kabar harian Inggris "Financial Times" melaporkan pada 2 Juni 2024 bahwa 5,5 juta infeksi telah terdaftar hingga saat ini. Demam berdarah, yang dapat menyebabkan demam tinggi, nyeri otot dan pendarahan internal, telah menyebabkan lebih dari 3.200 kematian tahun ini.

Bakteri Wolbachia dimaksudkan untuk mencegah penularan virus demam berdarah, Zika, dan virus lainnya yang ditularkan oleh nyamuk ke nyamuk lain dan pada akhirnya ke populasi manusia di sekitarnya. Otoritas kesehatan Brasil telah menguji coba pelepasan nyamuk laboratorium di lima kota besar di Brasil. Namun apa dampak dari pelepasan nyamuk tersebut? Paling tidak, angka-angka yang ada saat ini menunjukkan dengan jelas bahwa tidak ada penurunan jumlah kasus demam berdarah, tetapi justru terjadi peningkatan.
Melihat ke masa lalu menunjukkan bahwa proyek-proyek penelitian sebelumnya untuk mengatasi penyakit menular yang disebabkan oleh nyamuk yang dimodifikasi secara genetik tidak efektif. Sebagai contoh, perusahaan bioteknologi Inggris, Oxitec, melepaskan lebih dari dua belas juta nyamuk yang dimodifikasi secara genetik di Brasil antara tahun 2013 dan 2015. Tujuan dari uji coba lapangan ini pada saat itu adalah untuk mengendalikan populasi nyamuk harimau "Aedes aegypti", yang secara khusus bertanggung jawab atas penularan demam berdarah. Namun, 30 bulan kemudian, hingga 60% nyamuk lokal juga ditemukan mengalami perubahan genetik. Namun tidak hanya itu, penurunan populasi nyamuk harimau yang ditargetkan dan awalnya telah tercapai telah kembali ke tingkat sebelumnya setelah 18 bulan. Persilangan antara nyamuk alami dan nyamuk yang dimodifikasi secara genetik diciptakan, menghasilkan populasi nyamuk yang lebih kuat daripada sebelum pelepasan.
