Summer is coming to an end and for months we have been prepared by the media and politicians for an allegedly dangerous autumn. With great unanimity, among other things, the protection by respiratory masks is again relied on, which, in addition to the proven ineffectiveness and the large waste problem, also may cause real health problems.
Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart is the head of the Hamburg Environmental Institute and warns against the harmful substances that both medical and FFP2 masks contain. According to Braungart, the masks are made of synthetic fibers, which contain organic hydrocarbons. Bronopol, a disinfectant substance, is also contained, as is formaldehyde, which is indicated by the manufacturers. According to Braungart, polycyclic aromatic compounds are also present, which are substances that are normally ingested with cigarette smoke or strongly burnt food. Neither the German Federal Environment Agency nor the consumer centers have any data or studies available to date that could give the all-clear in this regard.
The substance formaldehyde alone is known to cause skin problems and increase the risk of cancer. According to a 2019 case report from Belgium, a 38-year-old laboratory worker suffered rashes and other side effects from exposure to formaldehyde fumes during her lab work. When she changed jobs, these physical reactions disappeared and then suddenly returned when she had to wear a protective mask again during the Corona crisis.
In view of the fact that the German Federal Government is once again relying on the mandatory use of masks in the current Infection Protection Act, ignoring any dissenting voices, the question must be allowed as to what the government is really aiming at?
