The mobile network operators claim that 5G saves huge amounts of energy and is essential in the fight against climate change since 5G works more efficient than 4G, the previous mobile phone technology. Furthermore, the expanding digitalization would help make economic and social procedures more efficient and thus, would save more energy in the long run. However, there are substantial arguments that the 5th generation of mobile communications won't ultimately bring benefits in terms of energy consumption; in fact, it is quite the opposite. Projected global electricity demand for ICT (relative to the number of nuclear power plants Gösgen) - data transfer (mobile and land line) - production of ICT equipment - devices (TVs, PCs, notebooks, tablets, smartphones) - data centers - 21% of projected electricity demand Source: … Today, the Internet accounts for 10% of global power consumption. With 5G, an exponential increase of 20-50% of power consumption is anticipated by 2030 – despite the improved device efficiency! The fact is: • 5G is expected to interconnect up to one million devices per square kilometer. • 5G allows for much higher data capacities, calling for the infrastructure behind it to be extended accordingly. The energy requirements of mobile communication antennas and data centers will therefore increase significantly. And… • Most devices are not yet 5G-compatible. This creates a need for new devices, the manufacture of which causes an increase in energy requirements. From this perspective, it is not far-fetched to ask whether 5G technology will prove to be an energy guzzler rather than a propagandized energy saver.
