Zalecenia dotyczące szczepień muszą spełniać najwyższe standardy dowodowe. W końcu szczepienia polegają na profilaktycznym podawaniu substancji zdrowym ludziom. Wszystkie zalecenia STIKO dotyczące szczepień, oparte wyłącznie na własnych metodach badawczych, nie spełniłyby kryteriów określonych w aktualnym badaniu. Dlatego wszystkie one powinny zostać poddane weryfikacji.

Przeglądy naukowe (tzw. przeglądy systematyczne) są uznawane za złoty standard w medycynie opartej na dowodach. Są one często wykorzystywane jako źródło informacji pozwalające uzyskać ogólny obraz aktualnego stanu badań dotyczących skuteczności produktów farmaceutycznych, takich jak np. szczepionki. Również Stała Komisja ds. Szczepień (STIKO), której zalecenia dotyczące szczepień są przez wielu w Niemczech uznawane za miarodajne, korzysta z takich przeglądów, aby formułować zalecenia dotyczące szczepień. Niedawno opublikowane badanie wykazało, że: Ponad 91%, czyli więcej niż dziewięć na dziesięć takich przeglądów, charakteryzuje się „krytycznie niską” wiarygodnością pod względem jakości sprawozdawczości i w związku z tym nie spełnia standardów wiarygodności metodologicznej. Badanie to przeprowadził właśnie RKI, w ramach którego działa STIKO. Czy RKI czuje się obecnie zmuszone do zajęcia krytycznego stanowiska w związku z nasilającą się krytyką wobec STIKO i jej zaleceń dotyczących szczepień? Rzecznik zarządu ÄFI, dr med. Alexander Konietzky, wyjaśnia: „W swoich zaleceniach dotyczących szczepień STIKO zawsze opiera się na dowodach naukowych, jeśli chodzi o skuteczność i bezpieczeństwo szczepionek. Badanie przedstawione właśnie przez RKI i WHO dowodzi czegoś zupełnie przeciwnego: Niski poziom wiarygodności zdecydowanej większości badań dotyczących szczepionek stoi w sprzeczności z tym oczekiwaniem – do którego opinia publiczna ma jednak prawo. Zalecenia dotyczące szczepień muszą opierać się na najwyższej jakości dowodach naukowych. W końcu szczepienia polegają na profilaktycznym podawaniu substancji zdrowym osobom (…). „Wszystkie zalecenia szczepień wydane przez STIKO, oparte wyłącznie na jej własnych metodach badawczych, nie spełniłyby kryteriów określonych w najnowszym badaniu.
